Matza bagels? TB Yevamot 40

Even though tomorrow's daf TB Yevamot 40 is discussing the relationship of the yavam to the yevamah, it turns its attention to Passover on the first day of Passover. A coincidence? I think not.

Most sacrifices require that the bread brought along with it must be unleaven, matza. Because of the discussion, the Gemara is forced to say that matza which is boiled before it is baked in the oven is still considered matza.

"The Gemara asks: But if boiled flour is invalid as a meal offering, then with regard to this statement that we said that boiled flour is unleavened, for what halakha is it relevant? The Gemara answers: It is to say that a person fulfills his obligation with it on Passover. This is because even though he initially boiled it, since he subsequently baked it in an oven, it is called “bread of affliction” (Deuteronomy 16:3), and therefore a person fulfills his obligation with it on Passover." (Sefaia.org translation)

Although boiled before baked in the oven matza is kosher for Passover, later poskim forbad this process because we no longer know how to do it so that the dough won't rise. Consequently, boiled and then baked matza is forbidden Passover. (Rambam, Mishneh Torah, Hilkhot Hametz Umatza, chapter 6, halakha 6; Shulkhan Arukh, Orekh Hayim 454:3)

Oh well, there goes matza bagels!
