Biodiversity in the Talmud TB Shabbat 77

Today’s daf Shabbat 77 teaches us an important environmental Jewish worldview. “Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: Everything that the Holy One, Blessed be He, created in His world, He did not create anything for naught.” (Sefaria.org translation) Everything God has created has a purpose even though we might not see it or understand it right now. We should be very careful not to allow any plant, animal, insect, organism, etc. become extinct without careful and thoughtful consideration. (Of course, I’m not including diseases like polio, smallpox, and even covert 19. We should make these and other diseases extinct by allowing ourselves to be vaccinated against them.) Biodiversity is necessary to support all life on earth, including our own. Let me refer you to this website about the importance of biodiversity. Biodiversity was one of the reasons why God commanded Noah to take two of every kind of species onto the ark so life can be replenished after the flood.
