The last couple days the Gemara has been delving deep into the King David saga. To appreciate today’s daf TB Sanhedrin 20, let me share with you some background.
Avner was King Saul’s general and right-hand man; Yoav
was King David’s general and right-hand man. Avner remain loyal to King Saul’s
lineage for 2 ½ years after King Saul died on that mountaintop fighting the
Philistines. Avner had a change of heart and pledged loyalty to King David. Either
Yoav didn’t trust Avner and suspected his motives or was jealous that a former enemy
would be so warmly accepted into the court. On his own Yoav murdered Avner.
King David did not conspire or was an accomplice to this murder. King David violated
proper procedure to prove to the people that he was innocent of Yoav’s murder.
“Mishna: If a relative of the king dies,
he does not emerge from the entrance of his palace [palterin], as it
does not befit one of his stature to accompany the deceased. Rabbi Yehuda
says: If he wishes to follow the bier, he follows it, as that is what we
found with regard to King David, who followed the bier of Abner.
As it is stated: “And King David followed the bier” (II Samuel 3:31).
The Sages said to Rabbi Yehuda: The matter was only to appease the
people, so that they should not suspect David of ordering Abner’s death…Gemara:
The Sages said to him (Rabbi Yehudah: The matter was only to appease the
people, and they were appeased. As David would go out from among the men and go
in among the women, and went out from among the women and went in among the
men, as it is stated: “So all the people and all Israel understood that day
that it was not from the king to slay Abner, son of Ner” (II Samuel
3:37).”
Unlike King David, Trump fomented the insurrection on
January 6 four years ago. The bipartisan committee found him guilty. To this
day Trump and his stooges lie about his involvement and the nature of the
January 6 gathering. Check out the following link: https://x.com/TheDailyShow/status/1876343292188581906
“In the past four years, nearly 1,600 people have been
prosecuted in connection with the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Some
were accused of felonies like assault or seditious conspiracy and are still in
prison. But hundreds charged with lesser crimes have wrapped up their cases and
returned to their lives.
Jan. 6 was a turning point for
everyone involved. In breaching the Capitol, a mob of Trump loyalists caused
millions of dollars in damage, injured more than 140 police officers and, for
the first time in American history, chased lawmakers away from their duty to
certify a presidential election…The judges who have overseen Capitol riot cases
have routinely pushed back on that idea (that insurrectionist have been treated
unjustly).
“I have been shocked to watch
some public figures try to rewrite history, claiming rioters behaved ‘in an
orderly fashion’ like ordinary tourists, or martyrizing convicted Jan. 6
defendants as ‘political prisoners’ or even, incredibly, ‘hostages,’” Judge
Royce C. Lamberth, a Reagan appointee, said in court last year. “That is all
preposterous.” New York Times, January 6, 2025
We have the choice to either believe what our eyes saw
and ears heard of that terrible day or believe a liar.
Today Congress certified Trump’s victory. Unlike four
years ago there was a peaceful transfer of power with no riots. It is the
difference between democrats with a small d and MAGA.
