Avoid bad influences TB Sanhedrin 112

The last Sugiyah of our massekhet deals with an עִיר הַנִּדַּחַת (ir nedakhat), a town with the majority of its residence have turned to idolatry. “If you hear it said, of one of the towns that your God YHVH is giving you to dwell in, that some scoundrels from among you have gone and subverted the inhabitants of their town, saying, “Come let us worship other gods”—whom you have not experienced—you shall investigate and inquire and interrogate thoroughly. If it is true, the fact is established—that abhorrent thing was perpetrated in your midst—put the inhabitants of that town to the sword and put its cattle to the sword. Doom it and all that is in it to destruction: gather all its spoil into the open square, and burn the town and all its spoil as a holocaust to your God YHVH. And it shall remain an everlasting ruin, never to be rebuilt.” (Deuteronomy 13:13-17) We learn about the laws of an ir nedakhat now in the very last Mishna because those inhabitants lose their portion in the World-To-Come as stated in the Mishna on daf TB Sanhedrin 111b. According to Rabbi Eliezer an ir nedakhat never existed and never will exist, and its writing in the Torah is for the sake of “seeking and receiving reward.

The punishment for a person who turns to idolatry is different from the community that turns to idolatry. The person who worships idolatry’s punishment is death by stoning, but his relatives inherit his money. The people of an ir nedakhat’s punishment is death by burning and all their worldly possessions are burned in the town square.

To qualify to be an ir nedakhat, more than 50% of the inhabitants have to turn to idolatry. That means there might be some loyal Jews still remaining in the city. Their lives are spared along with all their movable property that exists outside the city. However, their movable property and money inside the city limits are burnt along with their idolatrous neighbors.

On today’s  daf TB Sanhedrin 112 Rabbi Shimon provides a reason why isn’t righteous property and money inside the city spared. “Rabbi Shimon said: For what reason does the Torah say that the property of the righteous that is in it shall be destroyed? Why must they suffer for the sins of others? The reason is: Who caused the righteous to live in this city inhabited by wicked people? It is their property that tied them to this city; therefore, their property is destroyed.” (Sefaria.org translation)

The longer a good person stays in the company of bad people the better chance they will influence him to go off the straight and narrow path. Neha Jadeja gives good advice how to avoid outsider and bad influences.
